The difference between decoration and intention
There is a version of interior design that is about filling space. Adding colour, texture, objects — until a room feels complete. This is decoration. It is not wrong. But it is not what we are interested in.
There is another version. One where every object in a room has been chosen not because it fills a gap, but because it earns its place. Where the question is not “what should go here?” but “what belongs here?” This is intention.
The difference is felt, not seen
You can walk into a decorated room and feel nothing in particular. Everything is fine. Everything matches. Nothing is out of place. And yet something is missing.
You can walk into an intentional room and feel it immediately — a sense of calm, of coherence, of someone having thought carefully about what this space should be. The objects do not compete. They converse.
The difference is rarely about budget. It is about attention.
What intention looks like in practice
An intentional object does not need to be explained. It does not need a story attached to it, a label, a brand name visible from across the room. It simply exists in the space and makes the space better for existing.
It might be a chair that has been in the same corner for twenty years. A ceramic bowl that holds nothing but holds the eye. A mirror that reflects the room back to you in a way that makes you see it differently.
Intention is not minimalism. You can have many objects and still be intentional. The question is whether each one was chosen, or simply accumulated.
